Animation Program

GHS Animation Program

Gunderson High School is fortunate to offer students state-of-the-art equipment and software to learn animation. In the Introductory Animation Course, students learn the principles of animation, 3D drawing techniques, and explore three main types of animation (stop motion, 2-D hand and computer drawn, and 3-D computer generated) to create original works. In the Advanced Animation Course, students build upon the basic skills they learned in the introductory course to create more complex projects, collaborate in creative teams and develop independent projects. To contact the Animation instructor, Michelle Longosz, please email her at mlongosz@sjusd.org.

Stop Motion Animation

Animation students begin the year exploring Stop Motion animation. They learn about its history and have the opportunity to work with clay, objects, white erase boards and/or pixilation to create their original animations in small collaborative teams. Students learn to use digital SLR cameras, Adobe Bridge, Quicktime, GarageBand and iMovie to create their projects.

2D Animation

Animation students learn traditional 2D Animation skills by first working with lightboxes and physically drawing the frames of their animations. They quickly transition to working with professional 2D Animation software, Digicel Flipbook, to produce their original projects. Students draw right in the program using graphics tablets and apply 3D drawing techniques that they learn, practice and develop throughout the school year. To complete their 2D Animation projects, students work in GarageBand to apply sound.

3D Animation

Animation students learn 3D computer generated modeling and animation through the program, Autodesk Maya. This is a complex, professional program that was used to create projects such as Avatar and South Park as well as many games. Students learn to navigate the program and model various objects and environments as well as use keyframes, graph editors and paths to create their own animations.

Animation Drawings

Animation students learn the importance of solid drawing which is one of the principles of animation. Throughout the year, students learn specific 3D drawing techniques that help give their drawings more depth and impact. Students draw every day in class, engage in specific drawing lessons and complete weekly drawing homework assignments.
