San José Unified Recap of the 2020-2021 School Year and Updates for Next Year
Dear San José Unified Community,
It is hard to believe that the 2020-2021 school year is done. We invite you to watch a recap of the year in honor of our students, families, teachers, and staff as we progressed through this very unusual school year.
We look forward to welcoming all of our students back to in-person learning for the full school day next year. Please see the latest updates below.
2021-2022 Bell Schedules: California recently adopted a requirement for public high schools to have a start time no earlier than 8:30 AM and middle schools no earlier than 8:00 AM. As a result, San José Unified needs to adjust the start and end times for all schools so we can accommodate the drop off and pick up of students for families who have students across multiple grade levels. This change will impact our elementary, middle, and high schools. We are working through the logistics now and will share the details as soon as possible.
SJUSD Hotspots: We have distributed thousands of hotspots to students this year to support distance learning. Distance learning has concluded, and students will return in person in the fall, so the data service on the hotspots will end on June 30, 2021. If you have a San José Unified hotspot, look for more information from your school on returning the devices in the fall.
Independent Study: California is in the process of finalizing legislation for the 2021-2022 school year, with all indications pointing to a return to pre-pandemic requirements for the length of the school day and full-time in-person attendance. Our independent studies program was an option prior to the pandemic, and San José Unified will continue to offer an independent studies program through Liberty Alternative School. If you are interested in learning more about the independent studies program, please complete the online interest form. We will share additional information once the legislature has passed a bill for 2021-2022.
We are so grateful for the support, commitment, and dedication of the entire San José Unified community. We have never been prouder of our students, families, teachers, and staff and the remarkable courage and adaptability they demonstrated this year. This school year would not have been possible without each of you.
Finally, we have significantly expanded our summer programs to provide more opportunities for students to come to school in person, connect with other students and teachers, and ensure that they are feeling confident about the 2021-2022 school year. If you have already signed up for a summer learning program, you should have received a confirmation email with details for your student. We have a very small number of openings still available for our K-8 students for families that may be interested.
We wish all of you a restful, safe summer break and look forward to seeing you in the fall.Top
